Last week Janis Hutchinson posted an insightful article about 13 challenges people face when they leave a non-traditional religious group. It is based on her groundbreaking book “Out of the Cults and Into the Church.” I call it groundbreaking because in 1994 when it was released, no one was thinking about the cultural and identity issues a person faced in making a radical faith transition. Janis was the first to make such insights widely available outside the academic literature. We’re more careful about using the “cult” word today, but her observations are still timely almost 20 years later. The article is called:
